I’m super excited to announce the launch of our 5 day training series called Weed Doesn’t Sell Itself, but first I want to share a personal story about how understanding content marketing transformed my life and business.
In 2014, I had to close down my dispensary, Brightside, in Portland, Oregon.
Despite our initial success and recognition, regulatory challenges forced us to shut our doors in April of 2014. For a year after, I found myself drifting, taking odd jobs and feeling lost about my future. I was knocking on doors for political campaigns, trimming for grower friends, and doing whatever it took to make ends meet.
A fateful day came in early 2015.
I got dressed in a button-up shirt, freshly pressed slacks, and a tie, ready to meet the hiring manager at McGrath’s Fish House to beg for a serving job.
On the way, I decided to stop by my friend Jeff’s house for what ended up being a life-changing smoke sesh. Jeff and Chris had created a highly successful cannabis blog (if you know, you know) that was getting millions of page views per month, outcompeting major sites like WeedMaps and Leafly through the power of SEO and consistent content strategy.
During that visit, Jeff explained concepts like CPM (cost per thousand impressions) and SEO (search engine optimization), showing me how digital content could be turned into money. He convinced me that I could make more money selling ads for their website than bussing tables…and he was right.
That day marked the beginning of my journey into digital marketing. By the next morning, I was up at 4 am, ready to start prospecting through sponsor inquiries.
This experience laid the foundation for my future successes, including leading marketing efforts for the National Cannabis Industry Association (NCIA) and serving as President of the Minority Cannabis Business Association (MCBA).
These achievements wouldn't have been possible without my deep understanding of content marketing. It enabled me to connect authentically with audiences and build sustainable growth strategies.
